BLACK PEOPLE'S CAUCUS PROJECT - Electoral Justice Project

OVERVIEW:

In the 2016 elections, Democratic primary turnout was just 14.4 percent in 2016 compared to 19.5 percent in 2008. Looking closely at turnout by demographics, 60 percent of voters who cast a ballot in the democratic primary electorate were over 45. In 2016, Clinton was able to secure the nomination in part because of lower voter turnout among young voters. Black voters under 30 were only 3 percent of the democratic primary electorate in 2016 and Blacks voters over 60 were 7 percent of the democratic primary electorate. The democratic primary allows the boldest policy positions to take center stage, but communities most marginalized are consistently underrepresented in the primary process.

In 2020:

Educate Black voters on the policy stances of leading candidates in the Democratic primary.

Target younger Black voters in the electoral process to demystify the process for electing the President.

Create space for political debate around national policy while centering the vision for black lives.

To further position Black organizations as the messengers for the Black electorate.

OUR COMMITMENT:

EJP IS COMMITTED TO ENSURING A BOLD LEADER WITH A PROGRESSIVE VISION IS ELECTED IN NOVEMBER 2020 WHICH MEANS THAT THE DEMOCRATIC PRIMARY IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN EVER.

While EJVF has not yet taken a candidate in the democratic primary we deeply believe that it is our duty to provide the Black electorate with accurate information to choose the Candidate that most represents their visions for their communities. This is why we are launching the 2020 People’s caucuses.

The primary elections present a unique opportunity to ensure issues that are important to our communities are centered. The Black vote will be crucial to the success of any candidate, thus EJVF is working to ensure that every candidate is offering policies that directly impact our material conditions.

THE CAUCUSES WILL BE ANCHORED BY A LOCAL M4BL ORGANIZATION. THEY MAY BE LOCAL OR STATEWIDE.
